If you’re into food at all the way I am, I love trying to find James Beard Award winner and nominees as I travel the nation! As there are so many amazing chefs throughout the nation, James Beard awards also break down their awards into regions (as well as lots of other categories). Rodney Scott, although “just a pit master” won the 2018 James Beard Award for Best Chef Southeast (Full list of winners here.) The fact that his BBQ beat out all of the other chefs in the entire South East region, just proves how delicious it really is.
We went on a weekend get away to Charleston, SC (only 3.5 hours from Charlotte.) Needless to say, it did NOT disappoint. Even if you pick up some on your way out of town, it’s always worth the stop.
I knew I couldn’t leave here without having the ribs, and the dry rub on this was perfectly spicy! Rodney Scott’s BBQ sauces have a little more kick than the rub, but not too much. Another great tip: Get hushpuppies or cornbread, because the honey butter is amazing.
Henry isn’t a “meat on bone” kind of guy, so he went with the pulled pork sandwich. He used the Rodney Scott BBQ sauce, followed up some great iced tea.
A real bonus? This meal cost $8 for the sandwich and 1 side, and 1 lb of ribs and 2 sides are only $13!
(Here is really interesting article written in the Charlotte Observer about our winner and other 2018 winners!)
